Ex-Manchester City defender Danny Mills claims his former club should try to bring in at least three players during the summer transfer window.
Speaking to BetVictor, Mills suggested that manager Pep Guardiola needs a backup option for Rodri, a replacement for Ilkay Gundogan and another left-back ahead of next season:
“Manchester City will be looking for an adequate deputy for Rodri. That’s very, very difficult to find. He’s so good. Whoever that player is, he’s not going to play that often. It might be five or 10 games. It would be nice if they could find a player similar to Ilkay Gundogan – he’s exceptional.
“City really need a new left-back too, a player who can attack in the same way Kyle Walker does on the right. That would be a position that City are really looking at. There’s an opportunity out there for one of the left-backs at the tournament to impress, as Josko Gvardiol did at the last World Cup.”
“But who can they get in? The problem is that a lot of the top players are already at top clubs. Do players want to leave a top club to even go to City if they’re settled and happy?”
You can’t really argue with Mills
The three positions that Mills singles out are the ones that most City supporters would agree need strengthening. Of course, whether the club will invest substantial amounts in those areas, it is up for debate.
In terms of the midfield situation, it is believed that the club will only go into the market if one of Matheus Nunes, Kevin De Bruyne or Bernardo Silva leaves.
There could be more flexibility on the left-back situation but, again, the Cityzens may only look to reinforce that position if Sergio Gomez is sold.
City can’t rest on their laurels
It does appear as if it will be a pretty quiet summer for the Premier League champions and there is an argument to say it is difficult to improve a squad that is already so good.
However, rivals such as Arsenal won’t be standing still and there is a danger that the club could put their title chances in jeopardy if they don’t strengthen sufficiently.
