Who is Serhou Guirassy? Milan and Juventus want Stuttgart star

10 goals in 5 games

Serhou Guirassy has written history to start the season. The 27-year-old striker has already scored ten goals in the first five Bundesliga games this season, matching a record set by Robert Lewandowski during the 2020/21 season. That season, Lewandowski would break the record for the most goals scored in the Bundesliga (41). Guirassy is still somewhat away from that record, but the Stuttgart forward has been the most prolific forward in Europe’s top 5 leagues this season ahead of Man City forward Erling Haaland.

With that in mind, it isn’t surprising that Guirassy has already been linked with a transfer away from Stuttgart. Reports out of Italy have linked the Guinean forward with Juventus and AC Milan. Although under contract until 2026, Germany’s Bild Zeitung reported this week that Guirassy has an exit clause allowing him to leave the Bundesliga side for €20m. Originally on loan from Stade Rennais, Stuttgart signed Guirassy on a permanent transfer for €9m this summer. Once signed permanently, Guirassy’s exit clause became active. Nottingham Forest and Ajax Amsterdam were interested in signing the striker but were unwilling to activate the exit clause.

Hindsight is always 20/20, but considering Guirassy’s goalscoring prowess with Stuttgart this season, both clubs might now regret not activating his exit clause. Stuttgart head coach Sebastian Hoeneß, in the meantime, has been happy that Guirassy is still in his squad. “I tried to show him that a season with 20 goals or more could show his true capabilities,” Hoeneß said. “Once he has done that, then I would expect another category of clubs might be interested in signing him,” Hoeneß added. Indeed, given Guirassy’s start this season, 20 goals certainly seem possible.

10 goals in 5 games – Guirassy ahead of Kane in Bundesliga goalscoring

Indeed, Stuttgart’s no.9 is only one goal away from breaking his personal record of scoring 11 goals in a single league campaign. Guirassy put up that record last season when he scored 11 goals in 22 Bundesliga games. This year, Guirassy has been involved in 65% of Stuttgart’s Bundesliga goals and has scored every 44 minutes.

The question is, will it last? According to Wyscout, Guirassy’s xG this season has been 3.87 or 6.13 XG less than the goals he actually scored. In other words, expectations are that Guirassy’s goalscoring will slow down sooner or later. The good news for Stuttgart, however, is that Guirassy still ranks third in the league in xG, only behind Victor Boniface (4.93) and Harry Kane (4.53). Both Kane (7) and Boniface (6) trail Guirassy in goalscoring at the moment (overview). Guirassy might not break the Bundesliga goalscoring record or finish ahead of Kane or Boniface.

But an argument could be made that he could finish the season as a top-three scorer. At the moment, Guirassy ranks third in shots in the league and fourth with touches inside the penalty box. If he keeps up that workrate, he will be among the Bundesliga’s top goalscorers at the end of the season, and a €20m transfer fee would make him a steal.
