Nobody tell Kostya Tszyu, but his sons reckon they’ve found the perfect antidote here in Las Vegas for his slightly, err, chaotic ringside manner.
“Yeah, weed gummies,” Nikita laughs.
“I’m thinking I might have to spike him with a few”.
As first revealed by Fox Sports Australia, the biggest weekend in Aussie boxing history just got bigger following revelations 54-year-old Tszyu is jetting into the world’s fight capital to cheer son Tim in his hyped headliner against Sebastian Fundora.

Incredibly, it will be just the second time Australia’s legendary Hall of Famer has watched his eldest son live — and the first time in eight years that he has seen younger son Nikita.
Back in 2016, Kostya famously arrived in Sydney unannounced as a surprise for Tim’s professional debut against Zorran Cassady at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Yet so hyped was the former world champion watching on from ringside – or “chaotic” as Tim later described it – there were suggestions afterwards that dad may never be invited to another event again.
“It was hard to deal with,” Tszyu would concede later. “Just out of control.
“Because dad’s a control freak, it’s hard for him to watch someone he loves fight in the ring.”
Yet with Tim Tszyu not only the WBO super welterweight champ now, but headlining, looking to unify and being talked up for a Terence Crawford superfight … well, wonderfully, dad is back.
So as for who gets charged with keeping the old boy contained?

“That’s on my brother this time,” Tim grinned on Monday afternoon, sitting on a stool and getting his hands wrapped before training at Split T Boxing Gym.
“Nikita can look after dad.”
At which point, sat beside him, little brother suddenly looked up and, slightly alarmed, said: “Oh, s***”.
Yet just as you would expect of a fella who eats bull testicles before fights and then washes them down with snake blood, he quickly recovered, accepted the role – “yep, I’ll take on taming the bull” – and suggested he may even use weed gummies to get it done.
Certainly, The Butcher won’t have any dramas finding said edibles given anyone aged over 21 can legally buy cannabis from no less than 24 licensed dispensaries on or around the strip.
Yet in truth, the younger Tszyu sibling – who is himself undefeated and preparing to defend the Australian super welterweight title back home next month – said he was just happy to see his father face-to-face again.
“Because I haven’t seen dad in eight years,” he revealed.
“When he last came to Australia, I was actually away on holiday with a former girlfriend.
“(Laughs) It was the absolute worst timing.
“So I just can’t wait to see him and say ‘what’s been happening old man’.
“I’m really hoping there will be time to go as a family and get dinner, too.
“It’s been a while since we did that.”

Certainly the transformation in Tim Tszyu, the fighter, man, all of it, since his father last saw him live has been immense.
Indeed, when Kostya pointed, spat and generally went berka for his son’s debut, it was him who was still the story in every sense.
Not anymore.
No, while his father may have fought five times here in Las Vegas – and most famously stopped Zab Judah for that most unforgettable of finishes – all focus now is on his son.
A fella looking to arrive, unify and become the first Australian-born fighter to headline an American Pay-Per-View – something not even Kostya did.
“Last time dad watched me fight, I was 21,” Tszyu grinned as uncle and trainer Igor Goloubev wrapped his hands. “I was still a little kid.
“Now though, everything has changed.”

Shortly before Tim Tszyu’s proposed 2023 showdown with undisputed super welterweight king Jermell Charlo, it was revealed the old man was likely going to not be present, but walk his son to the ring on fight night.
However, then Charlo busted his hand only weeks later, starting a chain of events that saw him twice withdraw, move up to face Canelo Alvarez, and eventually disappear completely.
Then again before his fight with American Tony Harrison, Tszyu revealed his old man’s planned arrival had been stopped by an illness to one of his children in Russia.
Asked by Fox Sports Australia around this time if he was a little concerned about having the old man back in his corner, Tszyu laughed: “A little bit.
“But before it all happens we’re going to have a chat.
“Because the last time my dad saw me fight, I was a boy.
“Now though, it’s completely different.
“I’m my own man.
“And what I’ve done to get into this position, it’s been all on my own.”
Importantly, the fighter added that his father, who remarried and returned to Russia when his boys were still young, now understood all this.

“And respects it,” he said.
“Before, dad always saw me as his little boy.
“But not anymore.”
So as he sat getting those hands wrapped inside a Las Vegas gym, we had to ask exactly where dad will sit for Sunday’s fight – in the corner, ringside or maybe even 105 rows back in the bleachers?
“Ah, I’m not sure,” Tszyu shrugged, grinning.
“But he will be here.
“And I’ve put my brother onto it this time … I’m telling Nikita that he’s in control of everything.”
So again, if anyone were to see Kostya Tszyu with gummies, please say nothing.
