20 years ago, Kostya Tszyu defended a treble of world titles in Melbourne in his last fight on Australian soil during his incredible career.
On that night at the Telstra Dome (Docklands), Tszyu perforated his opponent Jesse Jaimes Leija’s eardrum and forced the rival corner to retire their bloodied fighter after six rounds.

Last night, the Tszyu name reigned supreme once again in Victoria’s capital, with Nikita crushing a resilient Benjamin Bommber with a first-round mauling that forced the referee to tackle Bommber to the canvas to protect him from an onslaught from the Tszyu brother known as ‘The Butcher’.
It was a hugely impressive performance from Nikita, who moves to 6-0 and continues to follow in the footsteps of interim world champion Tim and their multiple and undisputed world champion father.
And while Nikita was beaming after his statement win, his celebrations were outmatched by Tim’s, who leapt to the ropes and screamed with joy as the referee waved off the fight.
Tim hugged his brother, before dusting off Nikita’s gloves and planting a kiss on them.
As the celebrations continued, Tim watched his brother’s brutal finishing flurry on the big screen – and couldn’t help but enjoy himself.

In his post-fight interview in the ring, Nikita laughed as he watched a replay of his brother’s antics ringside, calling him a “crazy bastard.”
Tim declared: “Man, I’m a proud brother, you know. Nikita did a tremendous job. Over the moon! The night belongs to him, he’s the man.
“10 out of 10, except he got hit with one little shot. Besides that – 10 out of 10.”
And though Kostya wasn’t ringside, he was part of the celebrations with a video call with Nikita in the aftermath of the bout, with Nikita flashing a broad smile as he pointed the phone at the legions of cheering fans.

Two decades on from a famous night for the Tszyu name, it was Nikita’s turn for the spotlight.
Tim will defend his WBO super-welterweight interim world title against Mexican Carlos Ocampo on June 18, before a shot at Jermell Charlo for the undisputed moniker.
But after his brother’s success on Wednesday night, Tim is dreaming of his own Melbourne moment.
“My dad fought here in the Telstra Dome in Melbourne 2004, 2005 – 20 years ago,” he said [it was actually 2003].
“For Nikita to come back and continue that Tszyu legacy here, I think it’s an honour for us.
“I’m sure that one day I’ll be back here as well.”
