Arshdeep Singh Inspires Punjab Kings To Stunning Win Over Mumbai Indians In High-Scoring Encounter

MI vs PBKS Match Report: Kings XI Punjab, on Saturday (April 22), beat Mumbai Indians by 13 runs in a high-scoring affair to get back to winning ways in IPL 2023. After scoring 214 for 8, Sam Curran & Co. restricted the 5-time champions to 201 for 6.

MI vs PBKS Match Report: MI innings:

Chasing an improbable 215, Mumbai Indians could not get a good start as opener Ishan Kishan was out for just 1. However, skipper Rohit Sharma and Cameron Green quickly brought the chase on track. At the end of the powerplay, MI were on 54 for 1.

The next three overs went for 25 runs before Liam Livingstone dismissed Rohit in the 10th over to give his side a much-needed breakthrough. The MI skipper departed after scoring 44 off 27 balls. Suryakumar Yadav started in an aggressive manner, hitting Livingstone for three back-to-back fours in the 12th over to get going.

Green, on the other end, was hitting the occasional boundaries too and reached his fifty in the second consecutive game when he hit Rahul Chahar for a six in the 15th over. At the end of the 15th over, MI were on 149 for 2. In the 16th over, Green hit his compatriot Nathan Ellis for a four and a six before the pacer dismissed the allrounder to have the last laugh.

Before the dismissal, Green scored 67 off 43 balls. The dismissal did not have any impact on Suryakumar as he kept playing the big shots and reached his fifty off just 23 balls. In the 18th over, Arshdeep Singh gave his team the much-needed breakthrough by dismissing Suryakumar for 57. MI needed 33 runs from 14 balls at that stage.

With 31 needed from the last two overs, Tim David and Tilak Varma collected 15 runs from the 19th over to leave their team 16 runs short of the target in the final over.

Arshdeep bowled a brilliant final over, conceding just two in addition to dismissing Varma and Nehal Wadhera to power his team to a fine win. The left-arm pacer finished the game with figures of 4 for 29.

MI vs PBKS Match Report: PBKS innings:

Earlier in the game, Punjab Kings recovered from a precarious position to post a mammoth total of 214 for 8 after being asked to bat first. After Matthew Short was dismissed by Cameron Green for just 11, Prabhsimran Singh and Atharva Taide put PBKS in a commanding position.

At the end of the powerplay, the visitors were placed on 58 for 1. Prabhsimran, however, could not capitalise on the start and was dismissed in the seventh over by Arjun Tendulkar for 26. Piyush Chawla then bowled two brilliant overs to put Mumbai Indians on top.

In the 8th over, he conceded just 1 run. In the 10th over, he once again conceded just 1 run in addition to dismissing the dangerous Liam Livingstone and Taide to leave PBKS reeling at 83 for 4. And from thereon, it was one-way traffic as PBKS not only recovered from those setbacks but went on to post their highest score of the season.

Harpreet Singh Bhatia and Sam Curran shared a 92-run stand to put PBKS in a commanding position. The duo started cautiously and collected only 22 runs from over 11 to 14. In the 15th over, they collected 13 runs before  Curran and Harpreet hit Arjun for 4 fours and two sixes in the 16th over to collect 31 runs.

The partnership came to an end in the 18th over when Cameron Green dismissed Harpreet for 41. In the same over, Curran and Jitesh Sharma hit two sixes each to continue PBKS’ march towards a big score.

Curran hit his compatriot Jofra Archer for two more fours to complete his fifty off just 26 balls before being dismissed. Jitesh went on to finish things off on a solid note by hitting two more sixes in the final over before being dismissed for 25 off just 7 balls.
