A spectacular fighting century by Marnus Labuschagne during a rain-marred Day 4 of the Manchester Test has kept Australia’s hopes alive in the Ashes series. However, Labuschagne’s dismissal just before play was abandoned has left the visitors in a precarious position, still fighting to save the fourth Test.

After persistent rain delays, play finally commenced with Australia resuming their second innings at 111/2, still trailing England’s massive first-innings total of 592. The Australians were eager to capitalize on the opportunity to build a competitive score and set a challenging target for the hosts.

Labuschagne displayed remarkable grit and determination as he notched his first Test century on English soil. His 111-run partnership with the resilient all-rounder Mitchell Marsh (31 not out) held the Australian innings together and offered a glimmer of hope in the rain-affected match.

The persistent showers throughout the day created challenging conditions for both sides, with the umpires being cautious about the fading light, which eventually prompted them to advise England captain Ben Stokes against using fast bowlers. It was during this phase that England’s skipper Joe Root, who occasionally bowls off-spin, made a crucial breakthrough.

Labuschagne, attempting to cut Root’s delivery, ended up nicking the ball to wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow, who managed a juggled catch. The initial decision by on-field umpire Nitin Menon was not out, but England opted for a review, which confirmed Labuschagne’s contact with the ball. This dismissal reduced Australia to 211/5, still trailing England by 61 runs.

As the rain intensified, the umpires had no choice but to suspend play, leaving both teams to contemplate their strategies for the crucial final day. With only one day remaining and uncertain weather conditions looming, the outcome of the match hangs in the balance. For England, the situation is particularly critical, as they find themselves trailing 2-1 in the five-match series. To retain any hope of reclaiming the Ashes, a victory at Old Trafford is imperative for the hosts.
