The Brisbane Heat’s Big Bash League blockbuster clash with the Sydney Sixers has been abandoned due to wet weather with both sides sharing a point each.

“Unfortunately the weather just hasn’t eased enough for us to get a game in,” umpire Steve Dionysius said on Fox Cricket.

Rain wrecks Sydney Sixers’ BBL hopes | 02:51

“Quite disappointing obviously with the crowd still out in numbers, but just not meant to be on the first of January.

“The points are split between the two sides, so that is pretty much it for the evening.”

The point moves the Heat to 10 points on top of the ladder, while the Sixers move into second place on eight points.

Fans will be treated to full refunds after not a ball was bowled in wet and wild night in Brisbane.

MATCH PREVIEW

A clash of two of the best teams in the BBL this season caps off the New Year’s Day action as the Brisbane Heat host the Sydney Sixers on Monday evening.

The Heat currently sit first on the table with four wins and are coming off a 15-run win over the Thunder while the Sixers dropped their first game of the season last week to the resurgent Stars, going down by four wickets.

Wet weather could cause problems for both teams though with the bat flip delayed and covers on at the Gabba as of 7pm AEDT.

The BOM was tipping between three and 15 millimetres of rain from 7pm to 10pm AEDT.

Play can be delayed up to two hours and a final call on the match won’t be made until at least 9:15pm AEDT – with five overs a side needed.

Heavy rain continued and as of 8pm AEDT it looked settled in.
