A wave of Australian cricketers will reportedly take part in next season’s County Championship due to an unusually clear schedule.

According to The Telegeraph, Aussies not taking part in the Indian Premier League and T20 World Cup, hosted by the West Indies and the United States of America, could play in England.

Australia tour New Zealand in March 2024, but then don’t play again until September, leaving at least five months of clear air for players to play County Cricket.

Durham, who will return to Division One next season, have reportedly already signed seamer Scott Boland in a huge recruitment coup.

The 34-year-old will reportedly play in both the championship competition and the Vitality Blast, England’s T20 competition.

Interestingly, off-spinner Nathan Lyon is reportedly in talks with Lancashire regarding a potential contract for 2024 and onwards.

The 35-year-old previously signed for Hampshire ahead of the 2020 season but his contract was terminated due to the pandemic.

Meanwhile, Marnus Labuschagne is set to return to Glamorgan and currently sits in fifth place on the ICC Test batsmen rankings.

Usman Khawaja, Alex Carey and Todd Murphy will reportedly also be targeted by County’s searching for a quality overseas player.

Steve Smith reportedly won’t play for Sussex, with the south coast side facing criticism for allowing an Australian to adjust to local conditions ahead of the 2023 Ashes.
