India women skipper Harmanpreet Kaur praised Richa Ghosh after the batter played a key role in the team’s close victory over Australia Women in the second T20I DY Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai.
on Sunday, December 11. Ghosh, batting at No.5, smashed an unbeaten on 26 runs off 13 balls, which included three sixes
Thanks to the 19-year-old’s aggressive cameo, India Women managed to take the second T20I in the Super Over. In the one-over eliminator as well, Ghosh hit a big six off Heather Graham, before being dismissed of the next ball. However, India Women managed to hang on and register a victory to square the five-match series 1-1.
Speaking after the triumph, India Women skipper Harmanpreet Kaur backed the youngster and said, “I was always backing her, even when she wasn’t getting runs. Today we saw what we could do with her power hitting.”
India Women won the toss and opted to bowl first in the game. Beth Mooney and Tahlia McGrath starred for the visitors, smashing 82* off 54 and 70* off 51 respectively. In the chase for India Women, Smriti Mandhana led the way with a brilliant 79 off 49, before Ghosh’s knock ensured they took the game into the Super Over, which they eventually won.
Reflecting on the comeback win, after having been hammered by nine wickets in the first T20I, Harmanpreet said, “We kept backing ourselves. We learnt a lot from the previous game. If someone could get a bit more, then we could have got even 200. So that was the plan today, to back ourselves.”
Harmanpreet, however, admitted that India Women will need to work on their fielding if they want to win matches more consistently. She added, “Fielding is something we need to keep working at, we gave too many runs today. Bowling was better today, because this wicket was too easy to bat on, nothing for the bowlers. Fielding is the only thing we need to improve from today.”
The third T20I between India Women and Australia Women will be played at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on December 14.
