Navdeep Singh, the recent sensation in Indian sports, has not only captured the hearts of many with his exceptional javelin throw skills but has also revealed an unexpected side to his personality: his deep admiration for Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma. The Paralympic gold medallist, who recently clinched the men’s javelin throw F41 category with a remarkable 47.32 m attempt, shared his fondness for the T20 World Cup-winning skipper during a recent interview.

When asked who among MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli he preferred, Navdeep surprised many by expressing his admiration for Rohit. He recalled a particular innings that sparked his fandom, stating, “Rohit Sharma. He plays very well. He had scored a double-century. What an innings that was! I’ve been his fan since then.”

While Navdeep didn’t specify the exact double century he was referring to, Rohit has indeed achieved this feat three times in his career. He has scored one double century against Australia in 2013 and two against Sri Lanka in 2014 and 2017, respectively.

A T20 World Cup hero

Rohit’s recent success as captain of the Indian T20 World Cup 2024 team has further solidified his status as a cricketing icon. Leading India to a historic title win, he emerged as the second-highest run-scorer of the tournament with 257 runs in eight innings. Notably, Rohit had also won the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup as a player.

A busy future ahead for Rohit and company

As Rohit continues to lead the Indian cricket team, he has a packed schedule ahead. With his retirement from T20 Internationals, he will now focus on ODIs and Tests. He has recently taken a break from cricket, skipping the ongoing Duleep Trophy, to rest and prepare for the upcoming season.

The Indian skipper will be back in action for the Test series against Bangladesh, starting on September 19. This series will be followed by three home Tests against New Zealand in October. India will then travel to Australia for the crucial Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Looking ahead to next year, Rohit will also be aiming to lead India to victory in the Champions Trophy in Pakistan. This tournament presents another opportunity for him to add an ICC trophy to his already impressive collection.

Navdeep’s admiration for Rohit highlights the crossover appeal of Indian sports. While the javelin thrower may be a rising star in his own field, his connection to cricket shows how sports can unite fans and inspire individuals from different backgrounds.
