In a symbolic gesture, South African cricket players donned pink jerseys during the first ODI of the three-match series against India, showcasing their support for a meaningful cause.
Reason why South Africa players are wearing pink jersey
The initiative, widely known as the ‘Pink Day,’ is part of a broader campaign to raise awareness about breast cancer.
The special pink jerseys are worn as a tribute to those affected by breast cancer, with the players aiming to contribute to the global conversation surrounding the disease. Beyond being a cricket match, the Pink Day serves as a platform to highlight the importance of early detection, support for patients, and ongoing research efforts to combat breast cancer.

Cricket South Africa (CSA)’s decision to embrace the pink jerseys underscores the cricketing community’s commitment to using its platform to address social issues and contribute to charitable causes. Such initiatives not only add a poignant touch to the game but also encourage fans and supporters to engage in discussions about vital health issues and promote awareness on a broader scale.
“We are delighted to once again raise awareness on breast cancer with cricket fans. To help in the fight against breast cancer, awareness alone is not enough,” CSA’s CEO Pholetsi Moseki said in their official statement.
“We encourage people to be proactive and get screened. Breast cancer is a leading cause of cancer among women in South Africa, but it can affect men as well. Early detection can lead to effective treatment and a positive outcome,” he added.
South Africa opts to bat first
After winning the toss on a batting friendly pitch at the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa captain Aiden Markram elected to bat first.
“We are gonna bat first. [It’s a] Used wicket, we’d like to bat first, we are playing two spinners,” said Markram at the toss.
“It’s a fantastic day, hats off to the people. Hopefully both teams can put on a nice show for them. [Nandre] Burger makes his debut – special day for him,” the right-handed batter added.
