England captain Jos Buttler has produced one of the worst reviews in cricket history during his side’s seven-wicket T20I win over New Zealand.

After keeping New Zealand to just 9/139 from their 20 overs, England romped to 3/143 by the end of the 14th over to blow the Black Caps away.

But in the 16th over on New Zealand’s innings with the Kiwis struggling to get past 100 and part-timer Liam Livingstone bowling, Buttler went up for an absolute howler.

While the ball was tossed up, pitched in line and would have gone on to hit the stumps, it also only hit the middle of the Glenn Phillips’ bat.

“That is one of the all-time terrible reviews,” commentator Henry Moeran said on BBC Test Match Special, amid laughter from the commentary box.

“That’s a horrific review.”

Fans were equally ready to roast the English skipper, who laughed at the attempt himself after it came up on the big screen.

Freelance journalist Matt Wright said: “New contender for the most rubbish review I’ve ever seen. Not sure how Buttler thought that ‘lbw shout’ off Livingstone was worth a look (even got a standard mispronunciation of Barrow-in-Furness for good measure)”.

Broadcaster Freddie Cardy posted: “Jos Buttler and Liam Livingstone with the worst review of all time — that is incredible.”

Buttler also has form with the horrible reviews.

Back in 2020, Buttler reviewed for LBW on Aaron Finch when the ball struck the dead centre of the bat.

But in the end, the review didn’t really matter as T20I debutant Brydon Carse took three wickets to set up the big win.

The 28-year-old South Africa-born paceman, in for the injured John Turner, returned fine figures of 3/23 from his four overs.

Left-arm quick Luke Wood also took three wickets, following an expensive first over of the match that saw him hit for three sixes, on his way to 3/37.

Carse, playing at his home Durham ground, told Sky Sports: “It was obviously a great start to my T20 career. It was awesome to play in front of a home crowd at Durham and put in a good performance for the team.

“I tried to stick to my strengths, hitting the top of the stumps.”

With the bat, England lost Jonny Bairstow to the second ball of the innings, but otherwise had few alarms.

Dawid Malan made 54 off 42 balls and Harry Brook an unbeaten 43 before Liam Livingstone ended the match in style by hooking Adam Milne high over deep square-leg.
