Melbourne Renegades bowler Tayla Vlaeminck will miss the upcoming Women’s Big Bash League after dislocating her left shoulder during the recent Australia A tour of England.

The 24-year-old, regarded as among the world’s quickest bowlers, underwent surgery after sustaining the injury during a 50-over contest against England A in Guildford last month.

Vlaeminck’s exact return date is yet to be confirmed, but the right-armer has been ruled out of the WBBL, which gets underway in October.

“We’re disappointed for Tayla, she has shown incredible resilience and perseverance throughout injury setbacks over the past few years and worked hard to earn her spot on the Australia A tour,” Shawn Flegler, CA’s Head of Performance for Women’s Cricket, said in a statement.

“We will continue to work collaboratively with Cricket Victoria’s high performance staff to support Tayla over the course of her rehabilitation.”

Last year, Vlaeminck suffered a stress fracture in the navicular bone of her right foot, which ruled her out of the Ashes campaign in Australia, World Cup in New Zealand, Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and T20 World Cup in South Africa.

The Victorian was also sidelined for the 2020 T20 World Cup in Australia after damaging her foot on the eve of the tournament.

“She’s been so unlucky,” Australian wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy told Fox Cricket this week.

“I guess there’s some parallels to Pat Cummins that she can take some comfort in, and know that she can still have a full career if things stay in place.”

Vlaeminck, who has represented Australia in 15 T20Is and eight ODIs since her international debut in 2018, made her long-awaited return in June for the Australia A tour of England, claiming four wickets in four matches before her latest setback.

She has not played WBBL cricket since 2021.

“I feels sorry for her. She’s someone that works really hard and then kind of gets these setbacks at really inopportune times,” Australian all-rounder Ash Gardner told Fox Cricket this week.

“I know how hard she works, and hard how she was working to get back from her foot injury, and then another thing happens.

“It sucks because we know what she’s capable of. She’s someone that genuinely just terrorises batters, and she’s someone that I hate facing in the nets.

“I’m kind of hoping this is the last little thing for her, and once she rehabs and gets better from this, she can come back and have a really long time in cricket.”
