Bangladesh registered a significant victory by a 25-run margin over the Netherlands in Match 27 of the T20 World Cup 2024 at Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown on Thursday (June 13). Shakib Al Hasan played a pivotal role, contributing a gritty 64 runs off 46 balls to propel his side to a competitive total of 159/5.

Shakib’s innings proved crucial as he anchored Bangladesh’s batting effort with resilience and skill. His composed knock ensured that Bangladesh posted a challenging score on the board, providing a solid foundation for their bowlers to defend. In response, the Netherlands struggled to mount a successful chase against Bangladesh’s bowling attack. Despite efforts from their batters, the Netherlands could only manage to score 134/8, falling short by 25 runs in the end. Rishad Hossain emerged as the standout performer for the Netherlands with his effective bowling, claiming three prized wickets.

In the match, batting first, Bangladesh faced early setbacks with quick wickets falling. Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto departed early, followed by Litton Das, leaving Bangladesh struggling at 23/2. However, Tanzid Hasan steadied the innings with a brisk 35 off 26 deliveries, including 5 fours and 1 six. The middle order was anchored by Shakib’s unbeaten 64 off 46 balls, a crucial innings that included 9 boundaries and propelled Bangladesh to a competitive total of 159/5 in their 20 overs. Towhid Hridoy and Mahmudullah also contributed valuable runs to bolster the score.

The Netherlands bowlers put in a disciplined effort to restrict Bangladesh’s batting lineup. Netherlands’ struggle against Rishad Hossain

Chasing 160 for victory, the Netherlands faced early setbacks as they lost Michael Levitt and Max O’Dowd cheaply. Vikramjit Singh provided some momentum with a quickfire 26 off 16 balls, but the middle order struggled against Bangladesh’s bowling attack. Sybrand Engelbrecht’s 33 off 22 balls briefly revived their hopes, but regular wickets fell at crucial junctures. Dutt’s unbeaten 15 off 12 balls was not enough to overhaul the target, as the Netherlands finished at 134/8 in their allotted 20 overs.

Bangladesh’s bowlers showcased excellent discipline and control throughout the innings. Taskin Ahmed and Rishad were the chief destroyers, both picking up 2 wickets each with economical spells to apply pressure on the Netherlands’ batters. Mustafizur Rahman also contributed effectively to restrict scoring opportunities and ultimately seal the victory.
