Victorian opener Ashley Chandrasinghe batted through the day without even reaching 50 to keep the visitors in the Sheffield Shield final against Western Australia.

Chandrasinghe watched as his batting partners were constantly cut down by the WA attack at the WACA, sitting 46 not out off 266 balls at stumps, alongside Todd Murphy (0* off two) as Victoria reached 8-194.

Only the in-form Matthew Short (36 off 60 with five boundaries) proved a real threat to the hosts who won the toss and elected to bowl.

Five WA bowlers took wickets with Joel Paris striking to nab Short and Mitch Perry (33 off 86).

Todd Murphy was named off the back of his brilliant performance in India, which gave Victorian captain no concern about picking the breakthrough spinner for a Shield final at a ground he’s never played at.

Murphy took 14 wickets in four Tests in India what was also his first four Tests and first games in the cricket-mad nation.

The spectacled spinner’s strong form on the subcontinent has proven to be enough to push out incumbent Jon Holland for the five-day showdown, despite never having played a game in Perth and on a wicket Handscomb expects will be more suited to the home team’s pace attack.

Holland has played seven of 10 matches this season, including last week in Perth, for a return of 12 wickets.

“Todd Murphy hadn’t played a game in India either and he still got picked and did well there,” Handscomb said on Wednesday.

“We are not fussed about whether guys have played here or not. We have a lot of talent in the squad.

“Whoever misses out who has been playing … it’s going to be tough. We’ve got that decision to make.

“Once we have a few conversations and see which way we want to go, we’ll finalise that.”
