After leading India’s charge with the bat in the recently-concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2024, captain Rohit Sharma and his predecessor Virat Kohli led the victory celebrations as well on Thursday (July 4).

With thousands of fans swarming on the streets at Marine Drive and Wankhede Stadium, the Indian team also made sure to match the fans’ excitement and energy. The victory parade began at the Marine Drive and ended at the Wankhede Stadium. Inside the stadium, the BCCI had scheduled a felicitation event for the winning Indian team.

Before the felicitation event, the Indian team decided to parade the trophy around the stadium. And as soon as the players reached the fence, Rohit Sharma started dancing and dragged Virat Kohli as well, as the two veterans pulled off some bhangra steps. After seeing the senior pros dancing their heart out, the other members of the Indian team joined the celebrations as well, much to the delight of the jampacked stadium.

Earlier in the day, India landed in New Delhi and met Prime Minister Narendra Modi before leaving for Mumbai. Their flight was late but it did not compel the fans from leaving the venue as they waited patiently to catch a glimpse of the World Cup winners.

The parade finally began after a delay of more than two hours and the atmosphere was electric. The players and the fans matched each other’s energy during the parade as they celebrated the memorable triumph together.

India’s memorable triumph in Barbados:

Last week, India defeated South Africa in the final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 to clinch the trophy. The victory ended India’s long wait for the World Cup across formats. India had not won the World Cup in any format since winning the 2011 World Cup at home.

In the final, India registered a miraculous win over the Proteas. The Men in Blue were looking set to suffer another heartbreaking defeat as South Africa had raced away to 151/4 after 16 overs while chasing 177. With only 26 runs needed from the last four overs, the game was South Africa’s to lose. However, India’s bowlers came up with a stunning effort to restrict South Africa to 169/8 and powered India to a memorable win.
