India’s Shubman Gill actually lost money playing in the World Test Championship final after his team was fined its entire match fee, while he was fined for criticising Cam Green’s catch.

Both sides were sanctioned for slow over-rates during the match, won by Australia, with India losing 100 per cent of their match fee and the Aussies losing 80 per cent.

A total of 44 overs, nearly half a day’s play, was lost. Less than 75 overs were bowled on day two despite an additional thirty minutes in the evening session.

“It’s disappointing when you don’t get as many overs in as you like,” Cummins told reporters in the post-match press conference.

“To be frank, there aren’t many levers that can be pulled within the current rules to entice anyone to bowl quickly, so maybe it’s something that needs to be revisited.

“There were lots of stoppages in play for bandaging up fingers, and those sorts of things over the last few days.

“Fortunately it didn’t affect the result in the end, but ideally you’re playing 90 overs in the day.”

Meanwhile Gill was fined 15 per cent of his match fee for his criticism of the Green catch, ruled out by third umpire Richard Kettleborough.

Controversial catch causes ‘cheat’ chant | 00:37

Chants of “cheat, cheat, cheat” erupted from the India fans when players retired for the tea break, with some patrons going out of their way to heckle Green as he climbed the stairs towards the changeroom.

The 24-year-old’s Instagram was flooded with hateful messages and cheating accusations, including assault threats and derogatory remarks about his partner.

Gill encouraged the hatred with posts on both Instagram and Twitter criticising the correct call.

He was found to have breached Article 2.7 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to “public criticism of, or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an international match.”

Gill also received one demerit point on his disciplinary record.
