Jürgen Klopp is in no rush to return to the pressurised environment of management after earning the reputation as one of the best in the business across the last decade. The 57-year-old is immortalised at Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool due to his achievements but his decision to depart Anfield sent shockwaves around football.
Klopp cited tiredness as the main factor behind his decision to take a sabbatical and he’s already turned down various offers this summer. The German transformed Liverpool’s fortunes during his nine years on Merseyside as he delivered their first league title in 30 years and added their sixth European Cup in 2019. Recruitment was an integral cornerstone behind Klopp’s success at Liverpool with Virgil van Dijk, Alisson and Mohamed Salah all key signings. But which players represent Klopp’s most expensive signings across his full career? Let’s find out.
Jurgen Klopp’s most expensive ever signings
Klopp’s top fifteen most expensive signings all arrived during his time at Liverpool with Henrikh Mkhitarayn’s move from Shakhtar Donetsk to Borussia Dortmund for €27.5 million in 2012 ranking 16th. Darwin Núñez €85m move from Benfica to Liverpool in 2022 represents Klopp’s most expensive ever signing. The fee to bring Nunez to Anfield was just €350,000 more than what Liverpool paid to sign Van Dijk from Southampton – a transfer heralded as arguably Klopp’s most important in his career.
As the graphic above illustrates, Dominik Szoboszlai’s €70m move from RB Leipzig to Liverpool last summer ranks third, while Naby Keïta sits fifth after making the exact same move five years previous. Two of Klopp’s best signings at Liverpool arrived from Roma with Salah joining for €42m in 2017 and Alisson for €62.5m the following year. Eight of Klopp’s top ten most expensive signings remain at Anfield as he left Arne Slot an excellent nucleus of talent – Fabinho and Keita are the only two departures.
