After last season’s troubles in front of goal, INEOS decided to strengthen Manchester United’s attack and in came Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna.
Last summer, Erik ten Hag had to depend exclusively on Rasmus Hojlund with Anthony Martial perennially injured while Marcus Rashford was struggling for form.
The Netherlands international was signed after the club decided not to offer the Frenchman a contract extension. The 28-year-old left after nine years in Manchester.
He became an instant fan favourite after his debut strike against fierce rivals Liverpool and it seemed like the former Monaco starlet would go on to become a club legend.
Martial now a free agent
However, injury woes and a lack of effort on the pitch meant the France international remained inconsistent, scoring double digit league goals in only three out of the nine seasons.
Martial remains a free agent since departing Old Trafford but as per Sky Sports, Serie A side Atalanta are looking at the prospect of signing the free agent following Gianluca Scamacca’s injury.
The Italy international is all set to undergo a surgery on his knee after sustaining the injury in a pre-season friendly against Parma on Sunday.
Martial has suitors back home as well as in Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the MLS and it will be interesting to see which club he ultimately decides to join.
“Anthony Martial is among the names being considered by Atalanta for a new striker following the injury to Gianluca Scamacca,” as reported by Sky.
Atalanta eyeing Martial
“Italy striker Scamacca will have surgery after suffering a knee injury in a friendly against Parma on Sunday. He is expected to be out for some time and Atalanta are drawing up a list of potential replacements which is thought to include Martial.
“He is still without a club after leaving Manchester United, taking time to consider his options this summer amid interest from a number clubs.
“French club Lille are one of those while he also has options in the MLS, Brazil and UAE. Martial is said to be uninterested in moves to either Marseille or Besiktas.”
Whoever he signs for will be getting an enigmatic talent, capable of the impossible one day and unable to get the basics right the next day.
