Manchester United’s attack has floundered throughout the campaign with the team scoring only 47 times in the Premier League this season, the 14th most among 20 teams.
Rasmus Hojlund is top scorer in his debut season with 13 strikes while Marcus Rashford, who scored 30 times last campaign is yet to breach the 10-goal mark this term.
The less said about Anthony Martial the better. The Frenchman remains sidelined despite the club initially revealing he would be out for 10 weeks due to a surgery. It has been 12 weeks now.
And even when playing, the former Monaco star has not looked the part, lazyly sauntering the pitch much to the dismay of the fans who have kept singing his name for nine seasons now despite the player’s inconsistent displays.
Martial’s disappointing United stint
And his injury record has been abysmal as well, with the France international missing close to 100 games due to injury while netting more than 20 goals only once in a United shirt.
Even his previous contract extension was not unanimously liked but this time, the club have decided not to trigger the one-year extension option with the “brilliant” 28-year-old set to leave Old Trafford as a free agent.
As relayed by The Peoples Person, Martial will not be short of suitors with Serie A giants Inter Milan reportedly interested in his services.
However, the versatile forward is expected to steer clear of a move to Saudi Arabia with the player feeling he can still contribute in Europe.
Now, Spanish publication Fichajes have revealed Barcelona are also interested in the United No 9 and with the club struggling with financial issues, they are eyeing a Bosman move for the forward with 30 international caps.
“Barcelona have plans to reinforce their squad for the 2024/2025 season, with the club seeking to acquire players who can provide quality and versatility without making a large financial investment due to limitations suffered in recent years.
Barca want Martial
“Those chosen by Barcelona to strengthen their squad and improve their performance in national and international competitions would be Adrien Rabiot (Juventus), Anthony Martial (Manchester United) and Guido Rodríguez (Real Betis) , all of whom Barça have been following closely since quite a few weeks ago.”
The Juventus midfielder is incidentally a target for the Red Devils and it will be intriguing to see whether they can trump the Camp Nou outfit in the race.
Barca need a striker considering Robert Lewandowski’s advancing years, but whether the injury-prone Martial can be the answer remains to be seen.
Maybe, the slower pace in Spain and Italy could help revitalise the Frenchman, as it has with many former United players.
