Bundesliga done deal
Bayern Munich have completed their second signing of the January transfer window, following confirmation on Thursday afternoon that the Munich giants have agreed a deal with Bundesliga side Borussia Mönchengladbach over the signing of senior goalkeeper Yann Sommer. The Swiss shot stopper has signed a contract until 2025 and has now completed the move to Sabener Strasse as the club’s second January signing, following the arrival of former Ajax defender Daley Blind.
“I’m really looking forward to my new role at Bayern. It’s a big club with power, we’ve often played against each other – I know about the enormous quality and appeal of this club,” said Sommer in a club statement. “I’m proud to be part of Bayern now. We have big tasks ahead of us. I am really looking forward to starting with my new colleagues and to everything that is to come. I would like to thank Borussia Mönchengladbach for eight and a half great years and for making this transfer possible.”

Sommer, who has a market value of €5 million, has been a Bayern transfer target ever since first-choice keeper Manuel Neuer fractured his lower leg and ruled himself out of action for Bayern until late 2023. As such, the German giants were in desperate need of a worthy stop-gap and eventually settled on the Swiss shot-stopper at Borussia Park. Despite his previous contract expiring at the end of this season, Bayern will reportedly pay an up front fee of €8m, plus €1.5m in add ons for the 34-year-old talent.
Musiala level with Bellingham – The most valuable players in the Bundesliga
“After Manuel’s absence we had to react. We have big goals for this season that we want to achieve and that’s why we hired Yann Sommer, who we think is one of the best goalkeepers in Europe,” said Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidžić. “Yann has been a goalkeeper for the Swiss national team for many years, has Champions League experience, is a goalkeeper who plays and fits in very well with our team with his ambition and character. I would like to thank Borussia Mönchengladbach for the constructive negotiations.”
No deal until Gladbach found a replacement – Montpellier keeper heading to Germany
Naturally, Gladbach were far from willing to allow their no.1 choice keeper to depart the club, despite Bayern’s obvious interest. However, the deal finally got over the line when the German side were given the greenlight to snap up their own long-term replacement for Sommer in the form of Jonas Omlin from Ligue 1 side Montpellier. Which was also confirmed on Thursday afternoon by the German club.
“With the signing of Jonas Omlin, we have found a very good solution from our point of view,” said Gladbach director of sport Roland Virkus. “He is a very reliable goalkeeper with good charisma, strong on the line and also with the ball at his feet.” According to reports from France, the 29-year-old shot-stopper was put up for sale by the French club in an attempt to entice an offer from Gladbach. Who were only willing to match the French club’s demands, once they had a deal in place to sell Sommer to Bayern.
