Dortmund up, Bayern down

League leaders Borussia Dortmund make up four of the ten biggest winners in the Bundesliga’s intermediary market value update – the three biggest losers come from Bayern Munich’s squad. Eintracht Frankfurt’s highly sought-after striker Randal Kolo Muani makes a huge leap upwards and is now one of the top 10 most valuable Bundesliga players, while Germany’s two biggest talents are up €10 million and €15m respectively.

Dortmund’s outstanding form since the World Cup is also reflected in the new market values. The stand-out figure for the Black and Yellows is a further increase for Jude Bellingham, whose value rises by €10m to €120m. This now means that the England international is the joint-third most valuable player in the world, level with Real Madrid and Brazil star Vinicius Jr. and remains the Bundesliga’s most valuable star, despite a number of big increases at his own club and across the German top-flight.

For example, Julian Brandt has also seen the biggest upgrade of his career, from €28m to €40m. “Brandt has finally arrived at Dortmund in his fourth season,” market value admin Julius Weißenstein said. “The 26-year-old takes responsibility, has very good decision-making and is one of the key players for the current success.”

Bynoe-Gittens on the up – Musiala most valuable German in history

Nico Schlotterbeck (+€7m to €40m), who was called up to the Germany squad alongside teammate Marius Wolf (+€2.5m to €9m), climbed to the same level. And another notable stand-out from Dortmund was English talent Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, who saw his value increase by €6m to €14m. In total, there are seven upgrades and five downgrades at BVB, which on balance lead to an increase in squad value of €25m to €547m.

For second-placed Bayern, there is a decrease of €16m, taking the club’s new squad value to €980m. Among the four devalued Bayern stars are well-known players such as Sadio Mané (-€15m to €45m), João Cancelo (-€10m to €70m) Manuel Neuer (-€5m to €7m) and Serge Gnabry (-€10m to €55m). “Gnabry has fallen a little short of expectations this season and the assumption is that Bayern’s willingness to give him away has increased,” said market value admin Frederic Hillmann. “In the context of performance and age, we currently see him behind [Leroy] Sané and [Kingsley] Coman.”

“So far, the most notable Bayern signing of recent years has not been able to match the performances from his Liverpool days and has probably lost a lot of his value,” Hillman noted on the topic of Mané’s new market value. “In [Julian] Nagelsmann’s system he didn’t work so well, under Tuchel there is another chance.” The fact that the decrease in squad value for Bayern has not turned out to be larger is due, among other things, to the increase in values for Jamal Musiala (+€10m to €110m) and Josip Stanisic (+€4m to €12m). Musiala now has the highest market value ever for a German football player on Transfermarkt.

Market value rankings: Kolo Muani surpasses Mané and Gnabry

With the signing of Kolo Muani on a free transfer, Eintracht Frankfurt have pulled off one of the biggest deals in Bundesliga history. When the French striker moved from FC Nantes to Frankfurt in the summer of 2022, his market value was €16m – four updates later it is now €65m. “This season’s high-flyer is not only causing a sensation in the Bundesliga, but is also attracting attention internationally,” Hillman said. “There are increasing signs that he will be offered a lot of money in the summer and this is also in line with our assessment that his talents are likely to be in great demand in the market.”

Despite only being 19 years of age, Florian Wirtz will celebrate his next birthday on 3 May with a market value of €85m, which makes him the third most valuable player in the Bundesliga. “His meteoric rise in senior football was slowed down by a cruciate ligament rupture,” said Weißenstein, before explaining why the Bayer Leverkusen star saw the second largest in the update. “After his return, he immediately returned to being a match-winner and one of the main reasons for Leverkusen reaching the quarter-finals of the Europa League and the upward trend in the league.”

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.

The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
