Champions League roundup

The Champions League Tuesday games are wrapped up, and for Bayern Munich, it was once again business as usual in the Champions League group stage. The Bundesliga giants beat Galatasaray 3-1 in what was their eighth group-stage win on the road, passing a record set by Juventus between 2019 and 2021. Bayern are now unbeaten in 37 group-stage matches and have won the last 16. Bayern haven’t lost a road game in the Champions League group stage dating all the way back to Sep. 17, 2017, when they lost 3-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in France.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, Gabriel Jesus and Jude Bellingham wrote individual headlines. Jesus scored what turned out to be the winner in Arsenal FC’s 2-1 victory over LaLiga side Sevilla. The 26-year-old Brazilian winger is now just the second player in Arsenal’s history to have scored for the club in the Champions League. The only other player to do it was Marouane Chamakh in 2010/11. Chamakh scored against Braga, Partizan Belgrade, and Shakhtar Donetsk to open the season. Those three goals were the last three goals the Moroccan managed to score in the Champions League. Given Jesus’ talent and Arsenal’s current squad, it is unlikely the Brazilian will befall a similar fate.

Also, not stopping in his goalscoring prowess anytime soon is Bellingham. The English midfielder turned striker scored the winner against Braga on Tuesday (2-1). It was the 20-year-old’s 11th goal in 12 games for Real Madrid across all competitions. Among players playing in the top 5 leagues, only Serhou Guirassy (14), Santiago Gimenez (13), Vangelis Pavlidis (13), Luuk de Jong (13), and Lautaro Martínez (12) have scored more often in domestic and international competitions.

Champions League roundup: Oldest Austrian – Sánchez Chile’s top goalscorer

While Union Berlin are still looking for their first victory in the Champions League after their 1-0 defeat to Napoli, Christopher Trimmel secured his place in the Champions League history books. The right-back made his debut in the match and, at 36 years and eight months, became the oldest Austrian to make his debut in the competition, passing Michael Konsel (34 years 189 days).

The goalkeeper made his debut on September 11, 1996, in a 1-1 draw against Fenerbahce. Trimmel is also the second oldest Austrian to appear in the competition behind Salzburg’s Andreas Ulmer, who, at 37 years 11 months and 24 days, set the record against Inter Milan (2-1) on Tuesday (youngest and oldest Champions League players at a glance).

Speaking of Inter Milan. Alexis Sánchez scored the opener against Salzburg, which made him the top goalscoring Chilean in Champions League history ahead of Arturo Vidal. Sánchez has managed to score for four different clubs in the Champions League: Barcelona, Arsenal, Inter Milan, and Olympique Marseile.
