The transfer window closed for English Premier League clubs and, once again, they outspent any other league in the world – by some distance. Premier League clubs €2.33 billion on new players with star names like Leny Yoro, João Félix and Riccardo Calafiori moving to the English top-light.
Premier League clubs, however, also broke the all-time record for highest transfer income by any league in history with €1.62 bn recouped from player sales. Manchester City made the highest transfer profit in the Premier League, while Brighton had the biggest net spend of any team in the world! Chelsea were the biggest spenders again with €239m paid out on new arrivals. But where does this rank in terms of the highest total transfer fees paid by a Premier League club in one window? Let’s find out.
The Premier League’s biggest spenders in one transfer window
Chelsea’s total spend of €239m this summer would only rank 9th for biggest outlays in one window in Premier League history. The Stamford Bridge club are constantly scrutinized for their spending but they also €198m in sales and their net spend of €40.5m was just the 24th highest in the word. Chelsea, however, have spent the three largest amounts in one window in Premier League history and they’ve all arrived since BlueCo – fronted by Todd Boehly – gained ownership.
As the graphic above illustrates, Chelsea’s €464m spend in the summer of 2023 is a record for English clubs with Moisés Caicedo’s €116m arrival from Brighton a club record. The only winter window that features in the top ten belongs to Chelsea in January 2023 when they spent €330m on the likes of Enzo Fernandez and Mykhaylo Mudryk. Chelsea feature five times in the top ten with Manchester City twice and Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham are in once.
