Chelsea are set to explore the market in search of a new centre-back after Wesley Fofana was ruled out for an extended period with an ACL injury.

Fofana will miss the opening months of the Premier League campaign after he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and the defender will not travel on Chelsea’s pre-season tour of the USA.

It continues a wretched run of bad luck for the Frenchman, who has missed large periods of the last two seasons with broken leg and knee issues.

The results of Fofana’s scan will prompt Chelsea into assessing the market for new additions. Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Chelsea will target the signing of a centre-back to cover the loss of 22-year-old.

Fofana’s absence will also reemphasise Chelsea’s stance on Levi Colwill, who the Blues are insistent is not for sale. Brighton, Tottenham and Liverpool are interested in signing the England u21 international, who impressed on loan at the former last season.

Colwill will link up with Chelsea after an extended break this summer, following his participation in England’s victorious u-21 European Championship campaign.

The 20-year-old is understood to want assurances over his place in Mauricio Pochettino’s plans before committing to the offer of a new deal at Chelsea. His current contract is set to expire in 2025.
