Cristiano Ronaldo has officially been selected for Portugal’s 26-man squad for next month’s Euro 2024 qualifiers against Bosnia and Herzegovina (June 17) and Iceland (June 20).
The 38-year-old will be hoping to pick off where he left off under Roberto Martinez last time out in March, having scored four goals in the new Portugal manager’s first two games – which ended in 4-0 and 6-0 victories against Liechtenstein and Luxembourg respectively.
Those results allowed Portugal to open up a two-point lead over Slovakia in Group J of their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign, with six points from two games.
CR7 can reach 200 international caps in June
If Ronaldo plays against both Bosnia and Iceland, the Portugal captain will become the first men’s footballer to have won 200 senior caps.
He extended his record as the most-capped men’s footballer to 198 caps in March, leaving him 18 clear of former Real Madrid teammate and Spain captain Sergio Ramos in UEFA’s all-time list.
Before then, Ronaldo has one last match lined up with Al Nassr on Wednesday against Al Fateh. The Saudi Pro League title may already be lost to Al-Ittihad, but CR7 and the squad will be determined to finish on a high note in front of their home crowd at Al-Awwal Park.
