50 goals in 48 games

Manchester City forward Erling Haaland continued his unrivalled domination of English football on Saturday by breaking yet another Premier League record. After scoring the opening goal in the 27th minute against Liverpool in a match that ultimately finished 1-1, the Norwegian striker passed a milestone for quickest time taken by any Premier League player to reach 50 goals in the top-flight division. Haaland not only sits top of the list after scoring 50 goals in just 48 games but did so with no less than 17 games to spare on second-placed Andy Cole.

Haaland 50 goals

Haaland’s new record once again puts him above a number of legends from English football, with Alan Shearer (66 games), Ruud Van Nistelrooy (68), as well as Mohamed Salah and Fernando Torres (67), all falling behind the Man City striker when it comes to the time it took them to adapt to the English top-flight. Haaland will undoubtedly now have his eyes on breaking another break still held by the aforementioned Shearer, who remains the fastest player to reach 100 league goals after doing so in 124 games. And few would question whether the towering striker is capable of claiming that record too.

Haaland’s goalscoring has only gotten better at Man City

While many may have predicted that Haaland’s remarkable goalscoring form at RB Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund would slow down against the stubborn and star-studded defences of the Premier League, the exact opposite has in fact come to pass. To date, the Norway international has bagged no less than 70 goals in 72 games for Man City, which works out at an incredible rate of 0.97 goals per game for Pep Guardiola’s side or an even more impressive 1.09 goals per 90 minutes. And when we compare that to Haaland’s wider career to date, we can see that the young striker is actually performing better in England than he did elsewhere.

Indeed, when we narrow in on the striker’s record in Europe’s top divisions we can see that while Haaland has yet to match his incredible record of 1.47 goals per 90 in his second season at RB Salzburg, his two seasons to date at Man City are in fact better than his record at Dortmund. In total, Haaland averaged 1.04 goals per 90 in the Bundesliga but is currently averaging 1.16 goals per 90 in the Premier League. And while much of this may be down to him playing for an all-conquering Man City side, there’s no denying that his individual performances have not only been incredible but increasingly record breaking.
