Chris Sutton said Arsenal showed “they are building something” with their impressive 6-0 Champions League win over Lens.
The Gunners built on their weekend win over Brentford which moved them to the top of the Premier League and secured their place as group winners with the emphatic victory over their French opponents at Emirates Stadium.
After watching the game for BBC Radio 5 Live, Sutton said: “An outstanding display from Mikel Arteta’s team. They started the game strongly and got the first goal and then went from strength to strength. They eased off in the second half but it’s job done. Top of the group and a really outstanding Champions League game so far.
“Interesting Mikel Arteta’s selection before the game. We wondered how many changes he would make with Raya coming back in goal and Havertz getting the opportunity. It showed his intent about the importance of this game and the importance of carrying on that momentum. On they go. They are building something. They are doing it a little bit differently this season but it is very impressive.
“There was contrast in the way they have won their last two games – doing it late on at Brentford which popped them top of the Premier League and then needing a result against Lens. Putting the game to bed by half-time, the second half was always going to be so comfortable and they took their foot off the gas.
“From Mikel Arteta’s point of view and the Arsenal players’ point of view, these are players that are under pressure game in and game out. It’s a lovely position to be in when you are that comfortable in a game.
“He made changes and maybe they lost a little bit of rhythm with that, but it’s a perfect evening, a nice evening for Arteta. Normally we see him jumping around the technical area but after they went three or four up he was calm and composed, as his team were.”
