Jadon Sancho has returned to the Manchester United starting lineup for the first time since his fallout with manager Erik ten Hag last year.

The winger made just three Premier League appearances off the bench in 2023/24 before being dropped from the matchday squad for the 3-1 defeat to Arsenal on 3 September.

Ten Hag said that he did not select the 24-year-old due to his “performance in training”. Sancho responded by posting on social media that he has “been a scapegoat for a long time”.

The England international was subsequently banished from the first team and forced to train alone before joining former club Borussia Dortmund on loan in January.

Last week the Dutchman revealed that Sancho will be a part of his plans for the forthcoming campaign following a private meeting at the Carrington training facilities. “We’ve drawn the line,” he said.

The player’s return to the fold was confirmed on Saturday when Sancho was named in the starting lineup to face Rangers in a pre-season friendly on Saturday. He last started a competitive game for Man Utd in the FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City in June 2023.

Leny Yoro has also been picked to start against the Scottish outfit in what will be his debut for the Red Devils after completing his move from Lille. Jonny Evans was named as his centre-back partner.

Man Utd reportedly paid a €62m (£52.2m) transfer fee plus €8m of add-ons for the French centre-back, who was also wanted by Real Madrid.

Casemiro was handed the captain’s armband for the encounter, while Mason Mount makes his long-awaited comeback from injury in midfield.

Youngsters Sam Murray, Toby Collyer and Ethan Wheatley were also handed starts by Ten Hag.
