Jamal Musiala: On playing with Harry Kane and Bayern Munich’s incredible attack

52 goals scored already

I expected high things,” Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala said to a group of selected journalists after the Dortmund game that included yet another incredible Harry Kane show in the Bundesliga. “But probably not this high as he delivered so far. It is even easier than I thought. Firstly, to play with him, and I’m very happy, and hopefully he’s happy too.”

Another incredible performance by Kane meant that Borussia Dortmund once again had no chance at der Klassiker at the SIGNAL IDUNA PARK (0-4). Although Dayot Upamecano gave Bayern the lead (9’), it was Kane’s hattrick (9’, 72’ & 90’) that sunk the Black and Yellows and led the Munich side to a 4-0 lead. And Kane certainly looked happy as he carried the match ball through the mixed zone in a plastic shopping bag.

“I think we were just mentally ready for this game,” Musiala said . “We were all looking forward to it, especially after the loss in the DFB Pokal. We needed a good reaction, and we needed to start the game strong; that gave us a bit of air for the second half, where we created lots of chances—I should have scored. Then we controlled the game well; more fun.”

Jamal Musiala on Harry Kane: “The more we play, the better it gets”

Musiala pointed out after the game that the double punch by Bayern in the 7th and 9th minute, in fact, meant that Bayern were able to play their game. “The early goal gave us good energy,” Musiala said about Upamecano’s goal to start the game. “It gave us a bit of security as well, then we kept pushing and got the second goal shortly after. That gave us a bit more confidence to play the football we want.”

Although Bayern struggle with depth in defense and attack, the attack has quickly become one of the best in European football. That’s not just been evident in the Bundesliga but also the Champions League, where Bayern have won all three games in the group stage and scored nine goals in the first three games. Kane, in the meantime, has not just scored 17 goals in 14 games across all competitions but also has improved players around him. All of this factored into Transfermarkt’s recent Bundesliga market value update where Kane once again became part of the €100m club.

Sané is one great example; another is Musiala, who has obviously benefited from playing with Kane. “The more games we play, the better it gets,” Musiala said, who has now scored four goals and three assists in 13 games across all competitions for Bayern. A slower start than last season, but that can be explained by fitness issues. Plus, you get the sense that the 20-year-old German is still finding his chemistry with Kane in the attack. “He played a great pass to me where I should have scored, and I always look for him as well. I feel very comfortable with Harry up front. He plays amazing passes; I can just run in behind him, and he will find me. I think the more games we play, the more I will take my chances.”

Musiala: “Speed” and Kane make us dangerous on the counter-attack

Among all teams playing in Europe’s top 5 leagues, only Bayer Leverkusen (54) have scored more often across all competitions than Bayern (52). His hattrick against Dortmund means that Kane now leads all players playing in one of Europe’s top 10 leagues with 17 goals scored, which breaks down as one goal scored every 72 minutes. But as Musiala pointed out after the game against Dortmund, Bayern’s attack is much more than just Harry Kane.

“I think right now we’re very strong on the counterattack,” Musiala said when asked about Bayern’s strength in attack. “We have so much speed in the team with King [Coman] and Leroy [Sané], and that’s very hard to defend at times.” Sané, for example, has now scored nine goals and five assists in 16 games across all competitions. “Then you have Harry in the middle, who is always in the right spots to get that goal. We rely on that sometimes. Take the game against Galatasaray; we weren’t that cool in that game but then had two or three chances, and we took those.”

All of that almost sounds like a threat. Bayern, although not at their best, yet, are one of the best attacking sides in Europe. But Musiala feels that there is still room to grow. “As the season goes on, we will have even more chances and control the game even better.”
