Manchester United loanee Joe Hugill put in an absolutely dire performance as his Burton Albion side were soundly beaten 0-4 at the Pirelli Stadium by promotion-chasing Oxford United.

The 20 year old had seen an upturn in form recently, enjoying a successful Easter period.

He grabbed an assist against Wigan and hit the crossbar against Barnsley, achieving a score on Sofascore of over 7 on both occasions.

However, the stark reality is the striker has not scored since his debut against Derby on the 15th January and will be bitterly disappointed with his overall impact so far with the Brewers.

Burton were always second best in this encounter as they conceded three goals in 12 frantic second half minutes.

The U’s had 18 shots to Burton’s nine and dominated the ball with 56% possession.

Hugill himself had his worst game in a Burton shirt according to Sofascore and looking at his statistics for the match, it is hard to argue otherwise.

He was given a 6.1 rating for his afternoon’s efforts and was largely invisible in the contest.

The former Sunderland striker had zero shots of any kind as he hardly troubled the Oxford defence.

Despite playing 90 minutes, he only managed 13 touches and only attempted five passes, completing a paltry two to end the game with a 40% passing accuracy.

The youngster was also irrelevant in the air despite his tall frame, losing all nine of his aerial duels and only won one of his five ground battles.

To add to his nightmare, he was caught offside twice and lost possession of the ball nine times.

It is normal for a 20 year old in his first three months of professional football to struggle to find consistency but the insipid nature of this performance will be incredibly worrisome for the Red Devils and the player.

Lately Hugill has been able to string together a decent stretch of games as a starter, with this match being the seventh straight game he has started in.

However, after this performance, he will consider himself incredibly fortunate should he get the chance to begin the match away to Stevenage next Saturday.

The result sees Burton fall to 21st position and into the drop zone with only four matches remaining to secure their status as a League One side.
