Intermediary update in Belgium
KRC Genk are the biggest winners of the intermediary market value update in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League. The squad value of the league leaders has risen by €22.8 million and, at €122.3m, is now significantly closer to that of Club Brugge, who have suffered the biggest drop (-€19.2m to €156.7m).
The season was more than disappointing for the reigning champions from Bruges after surprisingly making the round of 16 of the Champions League. “Brugge sit 19 points behind Genk in the league and in Scott Parker already the second head coach was fired within a few weeks, in addition to the Champions League exit against Benfica and a lot of supposed top performers in poor form,” Bart Tamsyn, Area Manager of Transfermarkt.be, said. “It is logical that the market value curve for some players is now pointing downwards.”
Among the best-known market value losers are captain Hans Vanaken (-€3m to €12m), Ferran Jutglà (-€3m to €11m) and record signing Roman Yaremchuk (-€3m to €9m), but also the most valuable player in the Jupiler Pro League, Andreas Skov Olsen, who has rarely been able to consistently show his abilities, also due to injury problems. Despite a minus of €3m, the 23-year-old Dane remains at the top of the league ranking with a market value of €17m. The only winner in the ranks of Club Brugge in the intermediary update of around 100 players is left-back Bjorn Meijer, who enjoys a strong first season and is upgraded from €6.5m to €9m.
Orban in top 10 – The most valuable players in the Jupiler Pro League
The situation in Genk is completely different. There are no fewer than eight market value winners at the current league leaders, including the player with the most assists in Europe, Mike Trésor, whose market value rises from €8m to €13m. Midfield duo Bryan Heynen (+€2m to €11m) and Bilal El Khannouss (+€6.5m to €11m) and winger Joseph Paintsil follow close behind. The latter, for his part, was directly involved in 25 goals in 29 competitive games and, thanks to his strong performances, doubled his market value from €4.5m to €9m.
Meanwhile, the biggest winners of the update are not found in Genk’s squad, but at KAA Gent and Royal Antwerp. Gent attacker Gift Orban, who showed his scoring abilities in Belgium and Europe after becoming the top scorer in the Norwegian second division ahead of his transfer on deadline day, makes a jump of €8m. Twelve goals in nine games, including the fastest hat-trick in UEFA history, lead to a new market value of €9m.
Antwerp’s Vermeeren & Pacho among biggest market value winners
The same market value increase is recorded by Antwerp’s up-and-comer Arthur Vermeeren, who is now valued at €8.5m. “At just 18 years of age, Vermeeren is already showing amazing performances in the midfield centre,” Tamsym said. “Cool-headed and equipped with an extremely great understanding of the game, he was already considered by some to be a candidate for the upcoming senior international games. Although he is missing from Domenico Tedesco’s squad, if he continues to perform at the current level, it can only be a matter of time before he is nominated and his market value also continues to rise.” Vermeeren’s teammate Willian Pacho also receives a significant upgrade. The 21-year-old centre-back’s market value rises from €3.5m to €9m.
Royale Union Saint Gilloise, see increases for striker Victor Boniface (+€2m to €6m), captain Teddy Teuma (+€1m to €5m) and Lazare Amani (+€1.5m to €4m), among others, while Conference League quarterfinalists RSC Anderlecht are down by €2.2m. Although successful internationally, the season has been anything but satisfactory in the domestic league despite more consistent performances in recent games. Yari Verschaeren (-€2m to €8m) and Francis Amuzu (-€2m to €4.5m) are two of a total of seven players at the record champions who receive a minus. Only three Anderlecht youngsters are on the rise: Belgium international Zeno Debast (+€2m to €10m), goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen (+€4.25m to €5m), who was nominated for the Netherlands national team for the first time, and U21 international Killian Sardella (+€0.8m to €2m).
How Transfermarkt market values work
The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.
The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
