Kalvin Phillips seems destined to leave Manchester City this month with his gametime severely limited at the Champions League holders. The 28-year-old has started just twice for City this season and he’s been stuck on the bench in the English Premier League, making just four substitute appearances despite being in the matchday squad for every game. Phillips arrived at City from boyhood club Leeds United for €49 million in 2022 amid high expectations but he’s failed to nail down a starting berth.
Asked about Phillips’ future recently, Pep Guardiola apologised to the midfielder for his lack of minutes but confessed he didn’t have a role in his team. “If it comes to January and he stays, I’m more than pleased because he trains really good and he’s a lovely guy and character,” Guardiola admitted. “I don’t know what’s going to happen. I feel so sorry for my decision for him. I’ve said that many times. It’s just because I visualise some things and visualise the team and things – and I struggle to see him.”
Could Kalvin Phillips leave Manchester City?
Almost certainly. Phillips is surplus to requirements at City and Guardiola will offload him during the January window. Guardiola is actively looking to add a new midfielder to his ranks while Kevin de Bruyne has also returned to fitness to knock Phillips further down the pecking order. Phillips remains desperate to play regularly ahead of Euro 2024 this summer with England boss Gareth Southgate a known admirer of the midfielder.

What clubs are interested in signing Kalvin Phillips?
Phillips was linked with Liverpool and Bayern Munich in the summer but three clubs are reportedly in the race this month. PSG, Juventus and Newcastle United have all rumoured to be tracking the midfielder and it’s understood that Phillips would prefer to remain in England.
How much is Kalvin Phillips worth?
Phillips’ market value has dropped significantly over the last 18 months since joining City and his valuation currently sits at €28m. Phillips’ highest valuation was €50m in the summer of 2022 when he departed Leeds United for City and it’s understood that the Manchester club are holding out for a sizeable fee to allow him to depart permanently this month.
