Gary Neville thinks Harry Kane “is going to have to leave Tottenham” to win trophies and believes Daniel Levy would be “happier” if he is “sold internationally”.

Tottenham were knocked out of the FA Cup after a 1-0 defeat at Sheffield United on Wednesday evening.

This leaves Antonio Conte’s side only able to win the Champions League or Premier League this season.

The London club’s last trophy win came in 2008, meaning the likes of Heung-min Son and Kane are yet to win anything in English football.

They came close to success under Mauricio Pochettino, reaching the Champions League final in 2019 and finishing second in the Premier League in 2016-17.

Kane has been Tottenham’s top scorer in each of the previous eight seasons – and looks set to make it nine – yet has not been rewarded with a piece of silverware.

His lack of club success is well known around the country and is something he is constantly taken the p*ss out of for.

The England captain tried to join Manchester City in the summer of 2021 but a move failed to materialise and he remains linked with an exit.

German champions Bayern Munich are reportedly keen having sold Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona last summer.

Manchester United are also in the market for a new striker following the exit of Cristiano Ronaldo. They signed Wout Weghorst on loan until the end of the season in January, though the Dutchman is only expected to be a stop gap until the summer transfer window.

Following Spurs’ FA Cup exit, there has been some talk about Kane’s future with the club facing yet another trophyless campaign.

United legend Gary Neville has explained why his former club are the only English side that Kane could realistically join.

Neville rules out City because of Erling Haaland, as well as Chelsea and Arsenal because they are Spurs’ rivals. There is no mention of Liverpool, however.

The Red Devils are “desperate for a centre-forward” and if Kane “wants to win trophies”, he must leave the north Londoners, the former right-back thinks.

“He is a great professional and I think if Harry Kane could leave now and you could get him an exit out of there to a club in Manchester, probably, United or City, I think he would take that opportunity,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“It is more than likely not going to be City because of their Haaland expenditure, what they have done with him.

“Manchester United are desperate for a centre-forward. Tottenham fans will be furious with me; they will say it’s me coming on television trying to get their player to Manchester United. It’s not. It just looks to me like at this moment in time, the most likely move.

“Chelsea, I can’t see him going to Chelsea, they way in which he is quite loyal to Tottenham and there is a big rivalry between Tottenham and Chelsea, so I don’t see that happening and they do need a centre-forward.

“He is not going to go to Arsenal because again of the rivalry. Manchester United is the only option in England for Harry Kane this summer.

“Bayern Munich has been mentioned. That could happen and I think Daniel Levy would be happier if he was sold internationally.

“I think Harry wants to win trophies, then he is going to have to leave Tottenham, because Tottenham do struggle with that aspect.”
