Harry Kane has said that he hopes Gareth Southgate continues to take charge of the team after the England manager was coy about his future.
England crashed out of the tournament following a 2-1 defeat to France, a game in which Harry Kane both scored and missed second-half penalties.
The Three Lions had previously reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup in Russia before reaching the final of the delayed European Championships 15 months ago, and hopes had been raised that they could finally end their illusive wait for glory.
However, the defeat means that England’s trip to the semi-finals four years ago remains the furthest they have gone since reaching the last four back in 1990, with the only international silverware being the 1966 World Cup win.
Gareth Southgate still has two years to run on his current deal with the FA to take him to the next Euro’s in Germany, though speaking after the defeat, he was asked about his future.
“After every tournament we’ve sat down and reviewed and reflected,” Southgate told ITV. “So we need a bit of time to make sure everyone makes the right decisions.”
Kane – who took responsibility for the nation’s exit from the tournament – said it was the players’ hope that the 52-year-old would carry on.
“That’s down to him [whether he stays],” Kane said. “We’ve loved having him as a manager, I think he’s been incredible, when you see where he’s taken us from to where we are now, it’s an amazing leap.
“I think we all hope he stays, but that’s his decision, obviously he’ll go away and review that, but before we know it we’ll be getting ready for a Euros.”
