Transfermarkt has updated the market values of 460 Liga MX players, and there has been very little change among the top five most valuable players. However, there have been two downgrades among the top five most valuable players. Both the league’s most valuable player, Sergio Canales, and US men’s national team player Brandon Vazquez (both Monterrey) have received downgrades.

Liga MX: All new market values at a glance

Canales arrived one year ago from Real Betis and the attacking midfielder has scored 11 goals and four assists in 32 games across all competitions in 2023/24. Despite a strong year in Mexico, the 33-year-old Spaniard received a small downgrade of €1m to now €10m. That downgrade was necessary, given the age of the attacking midfielder. But despite the downgrade, Canales, together with the unchanged Julián Quiñones (Club América), Juan Brunetta (Tigres UANL), and Érick Sánchez (Pachuca), remains the most valuable player of the league.

Behind that group is American striker Vazquez. The 25-year-old Monterrey forward managed ten goals across 27 games in his first campaign in Mexico. But despite a strong showing the Mexican Transfermarkt team decided to downgrade Vazquez by €500,000 to now €8m. The main reason for the downgrade has been the transfer fee of $7.5m, which made an adjustment of Vazquez’s market value necessary.

Liga MX market values: Marcelo Flores among the big winners

Among the biggest upgrades is Georgetown, Ontario native Marcelo Flores. Signed by Tigres from the Arsenal academy last summer, Flores has managed seven goals and one assist in 32 games across all competitions in 2023/24. That performance was enough to be called up to the Mexican national team, and although Flores didn’t feature, there is certainly a sense that the 20-year-old is a potential star for El Tri. With that in mind, Flores received a 200% market value upgrade to now €2m.

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.

The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
