Manchester United’s new co-owners have made it clear that they are looking to secure young, talented stars instead of spending big-money on mercenaries looking for their last paycheck.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s vision also includes buying British stars who have experience of playing in the Premier League while new sporting director Dan Ashworth has made it clear that as per the current rules, acquiring a homegrown product makes the most financial sense.
One player who knows all about Old Trafford is former academy graduate Angel Gomes, currently plying his trade in France for Lille.
He created history when he became United’s youngest-ever Premier League player back in 2017 but was eventually let go by then-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Angel Gomes is a man in demand
The 24-year-old has come up by leaps and bounds since, even going on to make his England debut in the Nations League recently and with his Lille contract ending next year, there has been a lot of conjecture regarding a move back to England.
Newcastle have been linked with a move and now, in a huge surprise, Football Insider have claimed United’s fierce rivals Liverpool are eyeing the former United starlet.
There is also interest from Tottenham Hotspur and Borussia Dortmund, who have a habit of developing young players into superstars.
“Liverpool have joined Newcastle United and Tottenham in the race to sign ex-Man United sensation Angel Gomes.
“Sources have told Football Insider the three clubs sent scouts to watch the 24-year-old as he started his first England game in their 2-0 win over Finland on Tuesday (September 10).
“The is also interest from German giants Borussia Dortmund, who have a history of nurturing young English talent with the marquee signings of Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham.”
Liverpool want him
With his contract up next year, the Englishman is free to agree a pre-contract agreement with a club of his choice as early as January and the transfer race sure is heating up.
Gomes’ physicality was an issue back when he was just breaking through at United but the London-born star has proven he can handle it with Ligue 1 considered quite a physical league.
His passing ability and versatility would be a huge asset for United who are expected to lose both Casemiro and Christian Eriksen at the end of the season.
The new co-owners have shown intelligence even when selling academy graduates, inserting buyback clauses into most agreements. Surely, INEOS will not allow one of the club’s brightest to join Liverpool and will instead try to buy Gomes back.
