Luka Modric rolled back the years last weekend to score the winning goal for Real Madrid against Sevilla. Carlo Ancelotti introduced the Croatian international on 75 minutes in a bid to help Madrid break the stalemate and Modric delivered magnificently with a stunning finish.
The 38-year-old was mobbed by his delighted teammates as they held him aloft to express the affection towards him from within the Madrid dressing room. The midfield maestro’s game time has been sporadic this season – making just 11 league starts – as he approaches his 39th birthday and his future at Madrid remains uncertain. Modric, however, highlighted on Sunday that he’s still capable of contributing at the highest level and he became the fifth oldest scorer in La Liga across the last ten seasons with his winner against Sevila.

Modric joined some famous faces in the top ten oldest scorers in the Spanish top-flight across the last ten seasons. Jorge Molina is the only player to score in his forties, across that time period, after he netted for Granada in a 6-2 win over Real Mallorca in May 2022. Joaquín played until he was 41 at Real Betis and he ranks second on the list after scoring his final La Liga goal against Granada in 2021 at 39 years old and seven months.
As the graphic above illustrates, former Barcelona and Brazil right-back Dani Alves and Athletic Bilbao legend Artiz Aduriz join Modric in completing the top five. Modric eulogised over his former Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos after his return to the Santiago Bernabéu stadium with Sevilla on Sunday. “He is my brother,” Modric admitted. “His level is simply outstanding. Maximum happiness after seeing him, I talked to him yesterday, he was very emotional.” Ramos features seventh on the oldest scorers list after netting for Sevilla against Granada in December. Former Manchester City great David Silva and Manchester United striker Radamel Falcao also feature in the top ten.
