Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has been linked with a return to Real Madrid in the January transfer window.

Los Blancos are searching for defensive reinforcements after David Alaba was ruled out for the rest of the season with injury. The Austrian tore his ACL during last Sunday’s 4-1 win over Villarreal in La Liga.

Carlo Ancelotti could bring Varane back to the Bernabeu next month as cover at centre-back, according to Spanish outlet Cadena Cope. The club is also looking at recalling Rafa Marín, who is currently on loan at Deportivo Alaves.

However, Erik ten Hag wants to keep the Frenchman at Old Trafford, according to ESPN. The Man United manager is not willing to let go of either Varane or Casemiro, despite both players being linked with moves away.

The 30-year-old could leave the Premier League outfit as a free agent next summer after it was revealed by The Athletic that his contract expires in 2024 with the option for a further year.

Varane has been used sparingly by Ten Hag this season, starting just five times in the Premier League, although he did start in the scoreless draw with Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
