Manchester United are set to end their pursuit of Harry Kane with ‘little faith’ the club can persuade Tottenham into a sale.

Kane is understood to be Erik ten Hag’s first choice target as United look to sign a centre-forward this summer, with the England captain set to enter the final 12 months of his deal in north London.

Spurs run the risk of losing Kane on a free transfer in 2024 if a new deal is not agreed, but Football.London are reporting that the current feeling within the club is that Kane will remain for at least one more season.

Manchester United reportedly have little confidence that the club can persuade Daniel Levy into a sale this summer, with the Spurs chairman a notoriously difficult negotiator and reluctant to lose the club’s leading asset to a direct rival.

United appear the only viable option in English football at present, but further opportunities could open up to Kane if he waits until free agency.

Kane scored 30 league goals for Spurs during the 2022/23 campaign, the joint-best return of his Premier League career, and became the club’s all-time record goalscorer earlier in the season.

However, Spurs struggled for results and ended the season eighth to miss out on European qualification, their lowest league finish since 2008/09.

Kane has not won silverware during his career to date, despite individual success that includes three Premier League Golden Boots.
