Schjelderup no longer 1st

On loan from Benfica at Nordsjaelland, Andreas Schjelderup has lost his spot at the top of the market value ranking in Denmark. After the update of the Superliga, the 18-year-old Swedish wonderkid Roony Bardghji from Copenhagen received a €5 million upgrade, and at €9m, is now even with Schjelderup. Bardghji’s teammate goalkeeper Kamil Grabara, in the meantime, received a €2m upgrade and, with a market value of €11m, is now at the top of the ranking.

The 24-year-old Polish keeper will join Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg next summer in a deal worth €13.5m, and for the third year in a row, he has been a key player for the reigning Danish champions. Trained at Liverpool, the goalkeeper also showed strong performances in the Champions League and was one of the main reasons Copenhagen qualified for the round of 16—where they will face Manchester City—ahead of Galatasaray and Manchester United.

Grabara, who will become the most expensive goalkeeper in Wolfsburg’s club history and third most expensive keeper in Bundesliga history, could, according to a report by German magazine Kicker, no longer be available for Copenhagen in the games against Man City. According to the report, Wolfsburg have an option to sign Grabara already in January. The goalkeeper has evaded questions about his future and instead has stated that he doesn’t know what January will bring. Grabara saw his market value increase from €9m to €11m.

Whether his teammate Bardghji will still be in Copenhagen after January is also up in the air. The top talent has started 14 of 17 games in the Superliga and scored seven goals. Born in Kuwait, the Swedish U21 national team player is under contract until 2025 and has been heavily linked with a move to Bayer Leverkusen and top clubs in England, Spain, and Italy. The 18-year-old draws even with Schjelderup, whose market value remains unchanged.

Among the biggest winners of the Superliga update are three players playing for Copenhagen’s city rivals Brøndby IF: Nicolai Vallys, Mathias Kvistgaarden, and Frederik Alves. All three saw their market value increase by €2m. Also on the up is Nordsjaelland’s Marcus Ingvartsen with a new market value of €6.5m, which makes him the fourth most valuable player in the Superliga.

The player loser, just as it was the case for the fall update, was the Norwegian Mohamed Elyounoussi. The 29-year-old forward arrived from Southampton and has been directly involved in just six goals across 14 games. His market value was reduced to €6m.

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.

The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
