In the calendar year 2022, no player has provided as many assists as Lionel Messi, according to a Transfermarkt database analysis, which includes the top 15 leagues, the associated national and international cup competitions, and all international matches. The 35-year-old played 51 games for Paris Saint-Germain and the Argentinian national team, in which he contributed 30 assists in addition to 35 goals.

At the World Cup, Messi recorded three assists in seven games leading up to the title, thus passing Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, who could not add to his tally in the Premier League matches in late December, before the turn of the year. The Belgian had started the 2022 tournament as the player with the most assists, but failed to provide another one in Qatar, before the Red Devils were eliminated in the group stages. While Messi is the only player to break the 30-assist mark, seven footballers including De Bruyne have 20 or more assists.
Andrew Robertson, who provided 18 assists in 52 games for Liverpool and Scotland, came close to that number and is the only other Premier League player in the top 15, as well as the highest ranked defender. The most successful English footballer is Mason Mount with 17 assists in 61 games for Chelsea and the Three Lions.

Kylian Mbappé, who featured primarily as a scorer for PSG and France and ended 2022 with the most goals and, after the World Cup update, as the world’s most valuable player, still ranks ninth with 19 assists in 57 for club and country.
