David Moyes has said Kalvin Phillips needs support from West Ham after a difficult loan spell with the club.
Phillips signed for West Ham on loan from Manchester City in the January transfer window after struggling for minutes with the Premier League champions but has failed to make an impact during a disastrous spell at the London Stadium.
The 28-year-old has started just three league games and has made a series of high-profile mistakes. At the weekend, he was introduced with West Ham leading 3-1 at Newcastle and contributed to the club’s collapse at St James’ Park, conceding a penalty in an eventual 4-3 defeat.
Phillips was seen putting his middle finger up to a supporter who shouted “useless!” at the midfielder as he boarded the West Ham coach after the loss, an angry reaction to what has been a tough time for the England international, who lost his place in the Three Lions squad in March.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of West Ham’s clash with Spurs, Moyes insisted Phillips needs support and said he has faith the midfielder can turn around his loan spell.
“Kalvin’s a human being and what he needs is support and people to help him, which is what we’ll do.
“We need our fans to give all our players the support they require.
“Kalvin’s a really good player and I do believe we can still make something out of the time we’ve got with him here.”
