Nashville SC stayed alive in Leagues Cup play on Tuesday, but only after a wild ending saw some Club America fans rush onto the field in celebration at GEODIS Park and other people in attendance pepper the field with trash and debris.

Nashville SC appeared to have been eliminated in the competition between clubs from Major League Soccer and Mexico’s Liga MX, but instead advanced to the quarterfinals of the knockout round on penalty kicks (6-5) after Jack Maher was allowed to retake a penalty that had been saved.

Nashville SC will host Minnesota on Friday.

The game was tied 2-2 at the end of regulation. When Maher’s shot was stopped, Club America fans began running onto the field in celebration. But in the craziness, the game wasn’t over.

An official ruled the Club America goalkeeper came off his line early and awarded Maher another kick.

Maher made the second try. After Club America missed its next attempt, Nashville SC prevailed when Dan Lovitz hit the back of the net, prompting fans to pepper the field with cups and debris.

The drama started before penalty kicks began.

Club America took a 2-1 lead in the late minutes before Nashville SC designated player Sam Surridge, making his debut as a substitute, scored in the final seconds to tie it on a header from Hany Mukhtar.
