Bayern Munich have announced that Max Eberl will join the club as their board member of sport, starting on March 1st.
On rejoining the club that he was apart of in his youth, Eberl said: “I spent my entire childhood and youth at FC Bayern and in Munich, so it’s something special for me to return in a new role to the club where it all began. The job as Board Member for Sport is a great challenge, which I will approach with a lot of respect and humility, but with even more anticipation. Together with everyone here, I want to do everything I can to ensure that FC Bayern continues to be successful in the future and brings joy to its fans.”
Eberl will sign a contract at Bayern until 2027 and replaces the departed Hasan Salihamidžić on Bayern’s board. Eberl was the sporting director of RB Leipzig earlier this season but was fired due to his lack of loyalty to his contract. He had previously also criticised the Red Bull model at his former role of Borussia Mönchengladbach before going on a hiatus and joining the Saxony side.
Eberl will be put to work straight away as he will be key in helping Bayern appoint a new manager to replace the departing Thomas Tuchel. Eberl had previously tried to bring candidate Xabi Alonso to the Bundesliga adjuring his time at Gladbach but failed.
Not only will Bayern need a new coach but they will also have to re build the squad with the futures of several key players up in the air.
The former defender has experienced a mixed back as a sporting director. During his time at Gladbach he helped turn the team around from lower mid table to competing for European football. However, when he departed Gladbach he left the club in a difficult position with contracts of certain players poorly negotiated or not handled with.
Whilst at Leipzig his most notable achievements have been the sales of Dominik Szoboszlai, Joško Gvardiol and Christopher Nkunku.
The task at hand in Munich will be big for Eberl, but will he be able to handle the pressure cooker that is Bayern Munich?
