Andre Onana has opened up on his excitement as the Inter Milan goalkeeper closes in on an ‘irresistible’ move to Manchester United.
United have agreed a deal worth €55m including add-ons to sign the Cameroon international, who is set to undergo a medical with the Premier League side before an official announcement on the transfer is made.
Onana impressed during a brilliant debut season at Inter Milan last term, with the 27-year-old leading the Champions League for passes completed (407), saves (47), crosses stopped (14), clean sheets (8), and xG prevented (+7.6) as the Italian side reached the final.
The goalkeeper will reunite with former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag in the Premier League and has opened up on his excitement at joining the Red Devils.
“Now I really want to start this new experience, exciting and with a coach who for me is a master,” Onana said, via Sport Witness.
“I will go to a great league and a great club, which has a huge history just like that of Inter: I will start from scratch and give everything every day to show the new fans who I am.”
Onana opened up on his decision to leave Inter Milan and admitted the prospect of a Premier League move was ‘irresistible’. The goalkeeper discussed his future ambitions and said he is targeting Champions League success with United after last season’s final defeat with Inter.
“The important thing is to be honest and always tell people the truth. I am a person who always wants new challenges. Playing in the Premier League and for a club like United is irresistible,” Onana said.
“All parties wanted this to happen. But what matters is that if I had stayed, I would have been happy because I never had any problems at Inter.”
Onana reflected on Inter’s defeat to Manchester City in last season’s Champions League final and has set his sights on success in the competition at Old Trafford.
“Pride and sadness. You don’t know how much I would have loved to bring the trophy to Milan, celebrate it with our people,” he said.
“We were close to touching it, we deserved it: we played against City head-on, only details were missing, but this is football… Personally, I hope to win the Champions League with United, but I also hope that Inter replay a final and win it.”
