Cole Palmer has set his sights on a place in the England squad for Euro 2024 after a man-of-the-match performance in Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Newcastle.

Palmer was the star of the show once again to continue his excellent breakthrough season at Chelsea, with the summer signing having been one of the stories of the campaign at Stamford Bridge.

The 21-year-old created the opening goal against Newcastle as his shot was turned in by Nicolas Jackson, before scoring the second with a brilliant finish into the bottom corner.

Palmer has now scored 11 goals in the Premier League and laid on a further eight assists, with Chelsea’s faith rewarded after spending £42.5m to sign the forward after just a handful of appearances at Manchester City.

Palmer’s performance came in front of the watching Gareth Southgate and – after making his senior debut for the Three Lions in November – he is keen to earn himself a place in the squad for this summer’s European Championship.

“I thought I was ready to play football week in, week out and that’s the reason. I just wanted to showcase my ability and thankfully it has paid off,” Palmer told Sky Sports on his move to Chelsea last summer.

“It was a very difficult decision to leave City, I was there since six years old. I was ready to play football, had a chat with my family, had a chat with the club and moved to Chelsea.

“If you had told me at the start of the season I had a chance to go to the Euros I wouldn’t have believed it. I will just take it each game as it comes and see what happens in the summer.”
