Sydney FC stormed out to a 3-0 lead against the Central Coast Mariners on Saturday night but it could have been four if not for a stunning miss from Patrick Wood.
What looked to be a moment to forget for Mariners goalkeeper Danny Vukovic quickly faded into the background after Wood immediately topped him with an unbelievable blunder of his own.
The miss in question came in the 28th minute as the Mariners played the ball back to Vukovic, who lost control of his first touch with Wood in position to pounce and gain possession for Sydney.
What looked like a simple goal — and Sydney’s fourth of the night — was anything but though as Wood somehow sent his shot wide to the shock of the commentary team, who declared: “You will never see that again”.
“That is the most astonishing miss. Poor old Pat Wood must be wishing the ground would just swallow him up,” they added.

Sydney made a perfect start on Saturday night as Rhyan Grant scored within four minutes.
It all started with Luke Brattan, who crossed the ball into the box with the Mariners initially defending it before Anthony Caceres then headed the ball forwards, with Grant in position to finish it off with a looping header.
Having had a hand in the opener, Caceres then scored one of his own to double the lead before an own goal added to the Mariners’ woes, seeing Sydney go ahead 3-0 after 20 minutes.
Caceres was involved again, making a break down the left and with Wood looming in the field Daniel Hall had to make a play at the ball but unfortunately for him sent it into the net.
The Mariners were able to get one back through Angel Torres in the 56th minute but that is as close as they got, going down 3-1 to end their 12-game unbeaten run.
