Which Premier League teams have taken the most shots on goal per 90 minutes so far this season?

Johan Cruyff once said ‘you can’t score a goal if you don’t take a shot’ and who are we to argue with one of football’s greatest ever minds?

This list of teams have taken that sound advice on board, peppering efforts on goal across the opening weeks of the 2023/24 campaign. But which teams have taken the most shots on goal?

We delve into the stats.

Ranking the five Premier League teams with the most shots per game this season:

5. Manchester United – 16.3

Manchester United might be in the midst of their latest mini-crisis after a torrid start to the campaign, but the Red Devils remain among the Premier League’s most prolific shooters this season.

Just four teams have taken more shots on goal per 90 minutes than United this season, who have averaged 16.3 shots per game.

The downside for Erik ten Hag however, is that return has mustered just nine goals. Only four teams have a bigger underperformance in terms of xG to goals, with the club’s wastefulness in the final third in need of improvement if their Champions League hopes are to get back on track.

=3. Brighton – 16.4

Brighton are one of the most watchable teams anywhere in Europe right now, with the Seagulls offering entertainment.

Roberto De Zerbi has implemented a fascinating brand of football on the south coast, one which sees Brighton dominate possession and carve out chances at will.

Brighton rank joint-third in the Premier League for shots per game, third for xG, and fifth for average possession. Having secured a top-six finish and European qualification for the first time last season, expect Brighton to challenge at the top end once again.

=3. Manchester City – 16.4

Manchester City have also posted an average of 16.4 shots per game in the Premier League this season, the joint-third highest return in the division. The champions have wobbled a little of late with back-to-back Premier League defeats, but remain just two points off the top as Pep Guardiola’s side chase a record-breaking fourth consecutive top-flight title.

Continuing to create chances for Erling Haaland will be crucial. The Norwegian is the league’s leading scorer with eight goals from eight games and is chasing a second Premier League Golden Boot.

2. Everton – 16.6

Everton surprisingly rank second in the Premier League for shots per game in 2023/24 to date.

The Toffees have notoriously struggled to score goals in recent campaigns and while the club’s conversion rate is in need of improvement, Sean Dyche’s side are at least creating chances with regularity so far this season.

Everton are second for shots per 90 and fifth for expected goals, though a return of just nine Premier League goals means the Toffees have the worst underperformance in terms of xG.

The return of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has three goals in his last four games in all competitions, to form and fitness should aid their hopes of rectifying that metric.

1. Tottenham – 19.1

Tottenham lead the Premier League table and also top this chart, following a superb start under new head coach Ange Postecoglou.

The Australian has made an immediate impact in north London with Spurs unbeaten after eight games, a run which includes wins over Manchester United and Liverpool and a comeback draw at Arsenal.

Spurs are, comfortably, averaging the most shots in the Premier League per 90, with the summer signing of James Maddison having lifted the club’s creativity.

The midfielder has five assists in the Premier League this season, the joint-most in the division alongside Wolves’ Pedro Neto and Newcastle full-back Kieran Trippier.
