Chelsea and England right-back Reece James has admitted he is ‘devastated’ to miss the World Cup through injury.

James, who is dealing with a knee injury which is expected to keep him out until December, has been told that he will not be handed a place in Gareth Southgate’s final 26-man squad, despite initial optimism that he might make it back in time.

James has now confirmed he will miss out, conceding the risk to include him in the squad could be too big for Southgate to take.

“Devastated,” he wrote on Twitter.

“The minute I injured my knee, I knew the turn-around to make the World Cup would be tight, but I always felt it was possible. I’ve worked harder than I ever thought I could to give myself the best chance of going and truly believed I could help the team.

“I appreciate there was risk on both sides but it was one I was willing to take.

“Good luck to the boys. I’ll be back soon. Stay safe & sending love.”

Southgate, who will confirm his final 26-player England squad on Thursday, is expected to hand places to Manchester City duo Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips, both of whom are closing in on returns from their own injury issues.
